Callaway Lyn Griffiths

Michael (aka Daddy) and Ashley (aka Mommy) are pleased to announce the birth of their bundle of joy, Callaway Lyn Griffiths!!! She was born August 17th, 2010 at 6:57 am at Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George Utah. She weighed 9 pounds 2 ounces and was 21 and 1/2 inches long.
Mamma's birth story:
On Aug. 16th the hospital called us at home and said they had scheduled me for an induction (since I had hit 41 weeks) that day. Michael and I arrived at the hospital and they prepped me for the long road ahead. They started me on pitocin and that started working pretty fast! My body may have not reacted to having an over sized baby in my belly but by golly, it reacted to western medicine! The baby was doing really well but was still very high in the uterus. When I arrived at the hospital I was only dilated to maybe a 1+. Very discouraging. However, I kept my spirits high hoping things would work out how Heavenly Father had planned for us. It was a long day however, I had an amazing support system there to encourage me on! My sweet mom was able to be there, my amazing sister Kiana, my wonderful supportive husband and love of my life Michael, and my best friend Cassidy drove down to be able to be part of this wonderful occasion. Well, to make a long story short...after 17 hours of laboring, one epidural, zero meals for the pregnant one, and lots of pain...we decided to start pushing. At this point I was dilated to a 10 plus however Callaway still had not desceded into the birth canal. So, they tried 'rest and descend' where they put me on my right side with one leg elevated to try to encourage the baby to fall into the right position for birth, then the other side, and then on my back--over and over and over. And nothing. She was just not coming down. After 2 hours of pushing, our great doctor, Dr. Cain came in and discussed with us our options. A concern from day one was that I have a small pelvis and our sweet baby girl was measuring 'big-ish.' They call it cephalo pelvic distortion--meaning, my pelvis is too small for the baby's head. The doctor and nurse reassured me that physically I had done everything in my power ('cause I'm such an amazing pusher :D) to have this baby naturally but that it would just not be physically possible. The doctor discussed the pros and cons of each option--either keep pushing and all the risk is placed on the baby or consider a c-section and all of the risk is placed on the mom. Well, mommy mode kicked in and of course, I take the risk and would never want to put my baby in any danger. I cried considering the option but Michael and I both had a great sense of relief when we realized that I had done everything I could and now it was time to trust our Father in Heaven to take care of the rest. I said, "if Heavenly Father gave me a small pelvis, I hope he blesses me with an amazing ability to heal!" (which He truly has blessed me with this gift) So, the decision was made to have the c-section at 6:10 am and Callaway Lyn Griffiths was born at 6:57 am.
Every one always described to me beautifully the feeling they have when they first hear their babies voice crying after being born...however, there are really no words to describe how magnificent that feeling is. Michael was tenderly holding my hand as I lay on the surgery table and we both looked at each other with tears in our eyes to hear the sweetest, kinda raspy (like Mommy's), voice of our new sweet baby girl. Michael was able to go watch Callaway get cleaned off and weighed! He brought her to me, again, with tears in his eye--such a proud daddy!!! He is so in love with his baby girl!!! It was incredible because now I realize why Heavenly Father blessed me with such a great pregnancy--I was able to work as a speech-language pathologist up until my due date. When Michael leaned down to show our new baby girl to me, she was crying, and as soon as I said "Hi Callaway, it's Mommy--you know me" she stopped crying completely. She knows Mommy's voice--that's for sure! Now, if either mommy or daddy just talk to her, she calms down. She is already such an amazing baby! She is the joy and light of our lives. She's only been in our family for a few days and we can't imagine our lives without her already!
Callaway is beautiful. Pictures really don't do her justice. She definitely looks like her handsome daddy. She has his nose, eyes, eye lashes (meaning a mile long!!), and small ears but she has mommy's red curly hair and lips!!! She is perfect in every way!!! She is long and lean and perfect. She loves cuddling with Mom when she sleeps, loves daddy singing to her, and is so alert and attentive! Smart as can be and ready for the adventures this world has to offer!

Ready to go into surgery.

  3. Oh my word, what a DOLL. :) Love the red curls, she is such a cutie! :) I have had two Cs, so I feel ya there, I was told I have a small pelvis too, so same reason. AND, my first was 9 lbs 11 oz, so a big 'un too... but I like 'em like that, they are just too cute! :) She is seriously just so cute, you're making me baby hungry, Ash! She for sure looks like her daddy, but I can see plenty of her mommy in her, too. :) Take care, hope you're healing up well.
